Join the Melrose Farmers’ Market Board

Thank you for your interest in joining the Melrose Farmers’ Market board! Founded in 1994, we are a nonprofit organization dedicated to:

  • Providing equitable access to local foods

  • Supporting food security through our SNAP Match program

  • Strengthening the local economy by uplifting small farms and food businesses

We cultivate a community-centered market that deepens local relationships and creates a welcoming gathering place for everyone.

Who We’re Looking For

We seek active, community-minded individuals who want to play a meaningful role in shaping our beloved farmers’ market. Board members help guide the market’s vision, strategy, and operations while supporting its growth and sustainability.

Ideal candidates are ready to:

  • Take initiative and actively contribute to committees, projects, or special events

  • Represent the market in the community and advocate for its mission

  • Support fundraising, promotions, or volunteer coordination

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and other board members to implement programs

Requirements

  • Attend board meetings every 6 weeks

  • Commit to a three-year term (renewable)

  • Volunteer for at least 8 events per year, including market days and special events

  • Lead or support at least one project or initiative annually

Open Roles & Areas of Focus

  • Treasurer

    • Create and manage budget and ensure long-term financial health of the Market

    • File tax forms annually

    • Report on financial status quarterly to the Board to support financial decision-making

  • Secretary

    • Ensure the Market remains up to date in its registration and with the City and State

    • Record meeting minutes and distribute to the Board

  • SNAP Match Coordinator

    • Join team of 1-2 other volunteers to staff SNAP table at Market events, where you will process SNAP payments and distribute Market Bucks to SNAP participants

    • Document SNAP transactions at the end of each Market event

    • Work with vendors to settle up SNAP funds at the end of each Market event

    • Collaborate with the ED and Board to ensure SNAP program remains compliant with USDA guidelines

  • Volunteer Coordinator

    • Collaborate with community institutions such as Melrose High School and the Milano Center to develop volunteer recruitment strategies

    • Communicate with volunteers about timing and expectations of their volunteer commitment

  • Marketing & Promotion

    • Build the Market’s social media presence

  • Fundraising

    • All Board roles include fundraising responsibility. Current fundraising focuses include developing our local sponsorship program and securing local grants.
